Applying for the job, interview and induction

When I left university my first thought was to find a job that allowed me to do chartered qualifications. I was initially looking at accounting, but had very little knowledge of what a tax adviser did or how interesting it would be.

The interview had three stages and I found the process quite intense being my second real interview, but I was told about the tax department and the plans for Leathers and was given the opportunity to ask a previous graduate about exams, banter and if there was any negative aspects of the firm.

I started the job along with another graduate (who was a massive help in settling) and began with a week of induction learning the basics about tax. The second week, we were thrown into the deep end and haven't looked back since.

The work

Up to January we focused on personal tax returns, but not one was the same and the promise of varied and challenging work was lived up to. I think this is the point where you know you are progressing. Out of nowhere you have to be able to up your game in order to make what seems an impossible deadline. At times it can be frustrating but there is always support and I've never once been made to feel like a nuisance. You feel involved in the team and everyone has to pull together to achieve what seems like the unachievable.
